University of Nottingham Confers Lifetime Achievement Award to Outstanding Individuals cake-cutting

The University of Nottingham presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar and Yang Arif Datuk Dr. Prasad Sandosham Abraham, court of appeal judge on 26 September at UNMC’s 15th Anniversary Dinner featuring Alumni Laureate Awards held at Hilton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

“Nottingham graduates are renowned high achievers and today it gives us great pleasure to recognise some very outstanding individuals who have contributed in their respective fields and in our society,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC).

Y.A.M. Tunku Imran, son of the late HRH Sultan Tuanku Ja’afar, is one among the notable Malaysians who graduated with a law degree from the University of Nottingham, UK. Tunku Imran studied under the tutelage of the eminent University of Nottingham Professor, Sir John Smith, one of the leading academic lawyers of the twentieth century. While studying for a law degree in the UK, Tunku Imran represented the University’s first teams in squash and cricket and represented his hall in hockey, rugby and tennis.

Dr Abraham was conferred this award for his contribution to the judiciary in Malaysia and one of his significant achievements was to get invited to sit on the bench of the High Court as a Judicial Commissioner in 2009, he was the second member of The University of Nottingham alumni community to be appointed, the first alumnus was the late His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Shah.

Dr Abraham is a former President of The University of Nottingham Malaysian Graduates Association. He was also appointed as a Special Professor in recognition of his continuing links with the School of Law and in 2008 was awarded the Doctor of Laws honoris causa by the University in 2008.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented by DYMM Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim. This significant recognition is presented to individuals who have achieved extraordinary levels of success.
2015 Alumnus of the Year Award

The 2015 Alumnus of the Year Award was presented to Saw Cheng Pheng, finance and accounting graduate from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus in 2012 who pursued his passion in football by co-founding PCFreestyle 2 years after his graduation. The two-man freestyle football team manages and offers talent to perform in stage shows, video and television commercials and conduct freestyle football workshops.

Saw is responsible for establishing freestyle football coaching classes, making it the first of its kind in the world specialising in teaching football, dribbling and freestyle skills.

“For his enterprising career path and his development of a passion into a successful business model, today we are awarding the Alumnus of the Year Award to CP Saw,” said Professor Ennew during the presentation of the awards.

The event was graced by DYMM Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, an alumnus of The University of Nottingham. Tuanku Zara Salim, the wife of His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, has a first class degree in chemical engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK.

Patrick Joseph, Director of Academic Services; Professor Lee Chew Ging, Dean of Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) and Khan Quay King, Director of Information Services received long service award from Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice Chancellor of The University of Nottingham at the event.

Among the attendees at the event are Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, Group Managing Director, Boustead Holdings Berhad; Dato’ Zainal Abidin Haji Ahmad, former/Founding Chairman of Crops for Future Research Center, Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice Chancellor of The University of Nottingham and friends of Nottingham University from Malaysia and the UK.

The University of Nottingham has more than 250,000 graduates in the alumni community, a global family originating from the foundation of the University in 1881. Approximately 5 percent of the alumni members are Malaysians.

Famous alumni include Allahyarham DYMM Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak; Allahyarham DYMM Tuanku Ja’afar Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Former Agong and Yang Di Pertuan Negeri Sembilan; Sir Peter Mansfield, honorary graduate and Nobel Laureate for discoveries concerning magnetic resonance imaging; DH Lawrence, Author; Dr Stewart Adams OBE, Pharmacologist and inventor of ibuprofen and Sir Andrew Witty, CEO of GSK and Chancellor of the University of Nottingham.
