Nishtha Satyam, a University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) alumna from the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), is currently working as the Deputy Country Representative of UN Women, a United Nations entity working for the empowerment of women, based in New Delhi.
After graduating in 2009 with a MSc in International Business Management, Nishtha worked with KPMG and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) before her current role in UN Women. She is an inspiration to many on how she has shaped her career and emerged as a beacon for women in leadership.
Recently, UN Women partnered with top Indian women’s magazine Femina in a new campaign called #ActAgainstAbuse to address the rising cases of domestic violence during the lockdown.
Nishtha has been involved in many other campaigns including ones on women empowerment, women in leadership and human slavery, however, the #ActAgainstAbuse campaign is one of the more powerful initiatives that she has been involved in.
The partnership between both brands is expected to put the campaign on the global map and build visibility against abuse. UN Women and Femina have collaborated to curate a responsive contact line to encourage change.
To get more visibility and further highlight the severity and magnitude of the violence, the campaign teamed up with songwriter Prasoon Joshi, who will create a poem on #IgnoreNoMore.
The poem highlights the many times that people have witnessed domestic violence and yet chose to remain silent. The poem also talks about the need for this passive behaviour to come to an end.
Popular Bollywood actresses Shabana Azmi, Radhika Apte, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditi Rao Hydari have also come on board to show their support for the cause.
“She is an alumna of NUBS Malaysia and personally, I feel proud and privileged to be associated with her as an alumni and as a person. It’s really wonderful how she sees the University of Nottingham Malaysia – as a place where she could meet, make friends with people from different countries and gain a global perspective. She is a beacons for women leadership and empowerment,” Director of Research at NUBS Dr Mohan V Avvari said of Nishtha.
Provost and CEO of UNM Professor Graham Kendall said, “It is great to see our alumna achieving such great heights in their personal and professional development. At UNM we have always encouraged our students to rise above and beyond. Nishtha is a prime example of someone who has done just this.”
