Personal stories of Dasein Graphic Design students told across 10,000 pages of creative and expressive original publications.
Kuala Lumpur, 11 February 2019 – Students from Dasein Academy of Art’s Diploma in Graphic Design program recently organised the ‘UNFOLD’ Concept Book Exhibition from 25 to 27 January 2019 at AKU Café & Gallery to showcase works from their editorial design assignment. A total of 17 publications of various themes, outstanding designs and heartfelt stories were exhibited over the three days event. The exhibition received great support from hundreds of visitors who thronged the café including local publishers, special interest groups, tourists and more.
The students submitted their individual assignments to be displayed at the exhibition. Each book featured a theme that was memorable and unique to the student whom worked on it – some of the topics include interracial love, conquering inner fears, the passing of a beloved family member and more. “The idea of this assignment is to get the students to produce a book of their own – not just any book, but a legacy they wish to leave behind even when they are no longer around. Memory may fail us someday but books can note down all the valuable moments,” said Lew Tau Fei, lecturer in-charge of the subject.
One of the exhibited books, ‘VENTUNO: an interracial love story’ by student Nicky Chong Kar Yan was also selected and featured in the Packaging of the World (POTW) archive, joining the ranks of many other creative designers from all over the world.
The three-day exhibition was a great learning platform for the students as they get to share their works with the general public and received both constructive feedback and compliments that served as motivation for them to do better moving onward.
‘TAXI’ by Ng Jian Xin. A book about a teenager who left high school with a confusing mind of his future path. He then decided to be a taxi driver. However, the journey of picking and dropping different people led him to discover what his true interest is.
‘Dengue Calendar’ by Lew Yow Cong. This book tells his personal journey during the course of dengue fever he had when he was 18 years old. He was hospitalized for a week and suffered throughout the treatment but all the hard times changed the way he sees and thinks.
