Thousands expected to throng Curtin Sarawak campus for Open Day on 20 September

Miri – 27 August 2014 – Several thousand members of the public are expected to throng the campus of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) for its eighth annual Open Day this 20 September 2014.

Over 7,400 visitors (the largest number ever) took advantage of the event last year to discover more about the university. It is hoped that more Mirians, as well as visitors from neighbouring areas, will attend this year’s event which will take place from 10 am to 5 pm.

Next to its annual graduation ceremonies, the Curtin Sarawak Open Day is the grandest and most anticipated annual event at Curtin Sarawak. It is an occasion for the university to showcase its facilities, services, academic programmes and vibrant campus life amidst much fun and festivity.

This year’s event is of special significance as it mark’s Curtin Sarawak’s fifteenth anniversary as Curtin University’s first and largest international campus, now with over 3,500 students from some 40 countries.

Significant milestones Curtin Sarawak has achieved since its establishment include being awarded Multimedia Super Corridor status in 2001; opening of its permanent campus in Senadin in 2002; continued expansion of the campus between 2007 and 2009; attainment of self-accreditation status by the Malaysian Government in 2010; achievement of a Tier 5 (Excellent) rating under the SETARA rating system in 2009 and 2011; commencement of a third phase of expansion in 2011; and in 2013, achievement of ISO 9001:2008 certification and a Tier 5 rating for its engineering programmes in the D-SETARA rating system.

The event will be an opportunity for prospective students and their parents to learn more about studying at Curtin Sarawak. They can visit the Future Students Booth, where education counselling and career and personality tests will be conducted throughout the day. Student recruitment staff will be available to handle enquiries about courses, scholarships, financial aid and enrolment. Furthermore, visitors can participate in a lucky draw offering an iPad Mini and other attractive prizes.

Some 300 fourth and fifth formers from 15 local secondary schools are also expected to attend at the invitation of the university, which will provide them transport and lunch. Academic activities like engineering and business-related games, academic talks and guided tours are being lined up for them.

Other event highlights include an Innovation Expo featuring the teaching and research strengths of Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business, School of Engineering & Science and Curtin Sarawak Research Institute; a ‘Kiddies’ Corner’ and ‘Charity & Community Corner’; free health checks, blood donation drive and mobile dental clinic; a wide range of food and beverage, retail and activity stalls operated by the university’s student clubs and local businesses; and live stage performances.

In addition, there will be special showcases like the Newspaper Bag Design & Break Competition, Melanau Tibou Showcase, Miri’s Got Talent Competition, Mr & Miss Curtin Contest, Curtin – CPA Australia Entrepreneurship Challenge Finals, Car Show, Big Bike Showcase, Fishing Competitionand 15th Anniversary Exhibition.

With about three weeks to go, preparations for the event are in the final stages. Some 50canopies and booths have been allocated for internal and external participants and almost all those earmarked for external participants, including sponsors, local businesses and non-governmental organisations, have been taken up, while more than 50 percent of the over 30 student clubs at Curtin Sarawak have signed up to participate.

Another crowd-puller will be the event’s lucky draws. Attractive prizes including TVs, tablet PCs, smartphones, digital cameras and a range of camera accessories and household appliances will be given away in a series of lucky draws throughout the day. The grand prize will be a return air ticket to Melbourne sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA), which will give the winner the opportunity to experience the airline’s brand new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners flying daily from Brunei to Melbourne.

During the Open Day, visitors interested in RBA’s great deals for travellers can drop by at its booth for more information. They include its ‘Hot Deals’ promotion selling only from 20 to 22 September 2014 for travel between 1 October 2014 and 30 June 2015.
