Roaring Talents Capture the Tiger Spirit

From Left: Hoe Zhi Ying won First Prize in Maybank’s MyTIGER Values Art Competition. From right: Ng Jing Han received Third Prize in Maybank’s MyTIGER Values Art Competition.

The MyTIGER Values is an art and design competition initiated by Maybank Foundation in 2018 as part of its efforts to provide an artistic platform for aspiring young creatives. Entering its sixth edition, the competition theme this year is centered around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Maybank’s core values – Teamwork, Integrity, Growth, Excellence & Efficiency and Relationship-building.

In support of the United Nations’ SDGs that aim to create a more sustainable, equitable and prosperous future for all by 2030, the competition focused on 12 out of 17 of the goals outlined: no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, and life on land.

Open to students aged 18 and above from public or private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, the competition called for participants to incorporate one or more of these goals into their artwork, using their creative skills to spread awareness and inspire change. There were three categories to the competition, which are photo imaging, conventional or digital illustration, and sequential art from single panel to 8-panel editorial cartoon or comic.

Two students from The One Academy were among the winners of the photo imaging category. Twenty-year-old Hoe Zhi Ying won First Prize and RM6,000 in cash reward, while 21-year-old Ng Jing Han took home Third Prize and RM2,000 in cash reward.

Hoe Zhi Ying’s art piece titled “Two Worlds”.

“The inspiration for ‘Two Worlds’ came from caged animals in zoo enclosures with walls that are painted in jungle murals. The message I aimed to convey is one of embracing change, breaking free from constraints, and unleashing our full potential even in the face of adversity,” Hoe explained.

She prepared for the competition by delving into the theme and understanding the core values it aimed to promote. She then spent time sketching out various concepts and compositions that would best convey these values, before settling on the idea and began working on the artwork.

“My learning experience at The One Academy has been instrumental in shaping my artistic skills. The guidance of my lecturers and exposure to various techniques and styles have broadened my horizons and pushed me to explore new creative avenues,” said the Diploma in Visual Effects student.

Ng Jing Han’s art piece titled “Towards the better future”.

On the other hand, Ng Jing Han initially did not plan to participate in the competition as he already had his hands full with his final year project and graduation exhibition. However, the Diploma in Illustration student made the decision to participate on the day of the deadline, as he thought, “why not just give it a try?”

His art piece titled “Towards the better future” pictures a man riding a tiger – symbolising the harmony between man and animals, holding on to a kite flying freely over the landscape, representing our country’s pleasant climate.

“There needs to be more harmony between humans, animals and nature, for the sake of life and the environment today and for future generations. Every person on Earth must take responsibility for preserving endangered species, caring for animals and the environment,” said Ng, adding that conservation efforts and the understanding of how to care for nature must be emphasised.

The MyTIGER Values Art Competition not only recognises and rewards deserving young artists, but also provides a platform for spreading awareness, cultivating artistic expression, and letting voices be heard. The arts and creative landscape in Malaysia appears promising, thanks to talented young individuals such as these who possess a well-informed perspective on global issues.
