Students from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UMT) showcased their exceptional prowess during the 9th Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Malaysia (SIPMA) 2023, held from 10 – 17 September. Under MASISWA (Private University College), a Sports Council under the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), TAR UMT participants secured an impressive tally of 3 Gold, 6 Silver and 5 Bronze medals at this prestigious sporting event.
SIPMA is a platform to showcase the talents of student-athletes from public and private higher education institutions nationwide. Apart from being a battleground for sporting prowess, SIPMA also serves as a platform to strengthen the relationship between athletes and sports council officials from various institutions.
Ho Keesha, a remarkable student pursuing the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) Accounting and Finance programme from TAR UMT Penang Branch, demonstrated her outstanding capabilities by clinching a Gold, Silver and Bronze medal in swimming events. She attributed her win to having a strong mentality. “Having a strong and positive mindset is the key factor for my wins in all the events or competitions I have participated in. It is also important to remain committed to not give up and believe in your abilities,” she said.
Despite clashes in her schedules for her classes and training at times, Keesha would do self-training in order to maintain her form, highlighting her exceptional dedication.
Dyllon Thye Weng Ratchaga, a Diploma in Graphic Design student, exhibited exceptional talent by securing a Silver medal in the track and field high jump. He attributed his success to rigorous self-reflection, meticulous analysis of his performances, disciplined self-training, and the determination to learn and improve from every mistake. “No one could push you further other than yourself. If you can’t get over the bar, recap what you did wrong and avoid making the same mistakes. Improve bit by bit instead of making the same mistakes. Don’t let your ego get to you, there’s always someone who can jump greater heights than you,” he said.
This lad worked on his performance using the high jump equipment at the indoor track at TAR UMT. “For every training session, I started taking videos of myself jumping over the bar and analysing my mistakes in the video to improve and learn from my mistakes. I polished my form bit by bit before SIPMA 2023 using only this method.”
Another participant, Ang How Juen, who studies the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in International Business, showcased his leadership skills by captaining the male volleyball team to a Silver medal victory. He mentioned that they train for three sessions per week to prepare for SIPMA. “It was all about good teamwork and we arranged for more training before the games to prepare ourselves. Our training and preparations were to strengthen our minds, enhance our skills and build our fitness,” he said.
