Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) has successfully put Malaysia on world stage when it hosted the 3rd International Federation of Physical Education (‘FIEP’) Asia Conference on Physical Education and Sports (‘ACPES’) 2018 on 1 – 3 June 2018 at its Kuala Lumpur Main Campus located in Setapak attended by experts in physical education and sports from all over the world.
Themed “Physical Education and Sports Help Build a Healthy Society”, the gathering brought top scientists, experts and students together where they shared and discussed ideas, passion and best practices in the field of physical education and sports over two keynote sessions, three plenary sessions, six regular sessions, 47 parallel sessions, and 13 poster presentations.
The conference also offered ample networking opportunities with about 100 leading experts, inspiring speakers and researchers from over 20 countries across the globe such as USA, United Kingdom, Japan, Sweden, Ireland, Singapore, Australia and Slovakia amongst others.
In 2014 and 2016, the FIEP Asia Conference was held at the Kogakuin University in Japan before TAR UC was offered the honour of hosting the third edition in partnership with FIEP Europe. This made TAR UC the second higher education institution in the world to have ever hosted this conference.
Prof. Dr Raha binti Haji Abdul Rahim, Director of Division of Excellence Planning for Higher Education Institution, Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education Malaysia, was present to officiate this year’s FIEP Asia Conference.
She commended TAR UC for successfully bringing this prestigious conference to Malaysia to promote healthy lifestyle and at the same time, support Malaysia’s aspiration to be a sports powerhouse. “Physical fitness is a lifelong activity and there is no better time to collaborate and catalyse the market and interest for an active lifestyle. I strongly believe there is a lot to offer and learn from this conference through its network of contacts, experts and exchange of ideas among individuals and organisations.
“This truly bodes well for Malaysia’s aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and eventually becoming a sporting nation in the future,” she said.
Assoc. Prof. Dr Ng Swee Chin, Vice President of TAR UC, in the welcome speech elaborated on the importance of this conference in relation to the learning and teaching of physical education.
“This conference highlights the importance of a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and sports in the society. I sincerely hope that we can adopt some of the good practices presented in this conference and put them into our implementation plan for the diverse modes of education including physical education in TAR UC.
“We are extremely delighted and honoured to host this 3rd FIEP Asia Conference. I am proud that TAR UC has reached new heights in organising an international event such as this, and I will be looking forward to more of the same,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr Ng Swee Chin.
She also revealed that the conference was part of the run-up to TAR UC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration happening in 2019.
“TAR UC will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee Anniversary, which is its 50th anniversary. This conference is certainly a wonderful addition to our calendar of Golden Jubilee celebration activities leading up to the eventful moment in 2019,” she further highlighted.
During the conference, three TAR UC staff from the Faculty of Applied Sciences (‘FOAS’) received special awards for their dedication and excellent work in the field of physical education and sports.
Assoc. Prof. Dr Wee Eng Hoe was conferred the Medial Manuel Gomes Tubino Award for his immense contribution to the field, while Assoc. Prof. Dr Loke Chui Fung and Dr Ler Hui Yin were awarded the FIEP Commemorative Medal for their contribution to the development of physical education and sports at the international level.
In conjunction with the 3rd FIEP Asia Conference, there was also the Health and Fitness Expo 2018 held in TAR UC Kuala Lumpur Main Campus from 31 May – 2 June.
With the theme “Healthy Living for a Better Tomorrow”, the expo featured 27 exhibition booths showcasing various elements on healthy lifestyle such as nutrition, sports gear, innovative exercises, supplements, health monitoring, physiotherapy and many more.
Apart from exhibition booths, there were free eye examination sessions, health tests and interactive exercise classes for the visitors to promote the essence of active living.
