Miri – 10 September 2013 – To ensure visitors to its upcoming Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2013 on 14 September 2013 have a truly educational experience, Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is organising a series of public talks at its campus throughout the day.
Such talks are an annual feature of the event and will be conducted by senior academics from its School of Continuing Studies, School of Business and School of Engineering and Science, as well as researchers from the Curtin Sarawak Research Institute (CSRI) at the university and invited speakers from industry.
They will begin with an introduction to Curtin Sarawak’s Foundation, Diploma and Intensive English Programme (IEP) courses at 10 am in the university’s new 400-seat auditorium. Conducting the talk are Abdul Hamid Abdullah, a lecturer in the Department of Diploma Studies, and Michelle Voon Huey Fen, head of the Department of Language Studies and Humanities, at the School of Continuing Studies.
This will be followed by a talk entitled ‘Rocket Science and Strategic Decision Making: Examples and Personal Experiences’ from 10.40 am to 11.20 am by Professor Goh Bean San, a professorial fellow with the CSRI whose research interests include applied mathematics and applications to optimal rocket trajectories, management of hydrothermal power stations, optimal control of autonomous underwater vehicles, management of green turtles and numerical methods in optimisation as control systems.
A third talk entitled ‘Shell in Malaysia’ at The Auditorium will be by invited speaker James Lee, Shell’s UIA Recruitment Team Lead, from 11.20 am to 12 noon.
Following a lunch break between 12 noon and 1.30 pm, the talks will continue at the LTBS Lecture Theatre 11. At 1.30 pm, Dr. Lew Tek Yew and Dr. Joseph Sia, lecturers in the Department of Marketing & Management, School of Business, will give a talk entitled ‘Transforming Yourself Through Curtin’.
A talk entitled ‘Levelling Up’ by Terence Tan, a senior lecturer in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Science, will be held concurrently in the Lecture Theatre 201 at the School of Engineering and Science building (Prinia 2).
Between 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm, Dr. Anbalagan Krishnan and Dr. Dhanuskodi Rengasamy, senior lecturers in the Department of Business, School of Business, will be presenting a talk entitled ‘Accounting Beyond Number Crunching” at the LTBS Lecture Theatre 11.
A talk on ‘Starting Your Career in Engineering’ from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm in the Lecture Theatre 201 by Dr. Tang Fu Ee, head of the Department of Civil & Construction Engineering, will be the last for the day.
The talks will give potential students valuable insights into the different fields of study available at Curtin Sarawak. In addition, they can visit the Future Students Booth during the Curtin Sarawak Open Day and meet academics, staff and current students who can help them make informed decisions about studying at the university, as well as consult with representatives of PTPTN, Yayasan Sarawak and MARA on scholarships and loans and PTPTN’s National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN).
