Miri – 8 March 2012 – Over 500 new students have enrolled in various pre-university and undergraduate programmes at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) and have either commenced since last month, or will soon commence, their first semester at the university.
Among them are international students from Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Indonesia, Fiji, India, Kenya, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. They are joining over 3,500 current students who come from some 40 different countries, further enriching the unique international and cross-cultural learning experience at Curtin Sarawak.
176 new undergraduate students recently commenced their classes in various business, arts, engineering, science and technology courses on 27 February 2012 following Degree Orientation Week from 20 to 24 February 2012.
They will be followed by an anticipated pre-university intake of some 45 diploma and 290 foundation students who will commence classes on 19 March 2012.
At the start of the Degree Orientation Week, the new undergraduates got to view a video by the Vice-Chancellor of Curtin University, Professor Jeanette Hacket, welcoming them to the university. In addition, they heard speeches by Curtin Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Kerr, as well as the deans of the School of Business and School of Engineering and Science, and the Dean of Teaching and Learning.
This was followed by talks on student services and campus facilities by staff of the Student Services, General Administration and University Life departments, and the Office of Student and Staff Affairs. Members of the Student Council were also present. Other activities included tours of the university campus and the city and team-building activities.
Similar orientation programmes for the new diploma and foundation intakes will be held from 12 to 16 March 2012.
Pre-university courses offered at Curtin Sarawak consist of an English Language Bridging Course for International Students (ELB), Intensive English Programme (IEP) and diploma courses in Business, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Process Plant Technology and Occupational Health and Safety.
Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business offers foundation courses in Commerce and Arts in addition to a Bachelor of Commerce with single majors in Accounting or Finance, or double major combinations in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Banking, Entrepreneurship, Public Relations and Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management, in addition to a Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication or Borneo Studies.
The School of Engineering and Science, meanwhile, offers foundation courses in Engineering and Science that lead into its Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology (Computer System & Networking) and Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology) programmes. Majors offered under the Bachelor of Engineering programme are Civil & Construction Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Computer System Engineering and Electronic & Communication Engineering.
Curtin Sarawak also offers postgraduate programmes by coursework including a Master of Science (Project Management), Master of Policy Sciences, Master of Engineering Management, Master of Engineering Science (Electrical Engineering), as well as Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy programmes by research.
