Miri – 28 October, 2010 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is organising an Organ Donation Awareness Campaign on 29 and 30 October 2010.
The objective of the campaign is to create a stronger awareness among the public in Miri about organ donation by providing them better knowledge and information about organ donation.
Talks on organ donation by Hoong Ling from Kuala Lumpur, who is a committee member of the Organ Donation Public Awareness Action Committee under the Malaysian Ministry of Health and who is herself an organ donor, will be held over the two days.
An information booth will also be set up for people to make enquiries, as well as make pledges to donate their organs.
On 29 October, Hoong Ling will present a talk at Pustaka Miri from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm. On 30 October, there will be an enquiry and counselling session at Bintang Megamall between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm, and a second talk by Hoong Ling from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm. The talks are open to all and admission is free.
Hoong Ling is a Malaysian who has actively advocated organ donation since she was in secondary school. She is an active speaker at local talks, forums, seminars and international conferences. She has also been a TV presenter on Selamat Pagi Malaysia (Good Morning Malaysia); she emcees professionally, and has made appearances on local media.
Her writing has been published in The Star, The Sun, Utusan Malaysia, Berita Harian, Money Compass and The Entrepreneur.
Hoong Ling also donated half of her liver in 2009 to a young girl suffering from liver cancer.
Her achievements also include being selected as a Youth Ambassador in 2003, being featured on Akhbar Mahasiswa while in college, receiving the Selangor Youth Award 2006, as well as the Great Women of Our Time Award in 2008 and Lions Clubs International District 308-B1 District Governor’s Distinguished Service Award in 2009.
Her recent book, I Don’t Know You but Let Me Save You, Hoong Ling marks another phase in her endeavor to persuade her fellow Malaysians, and humanity at large, that we may pass away but our body parts can continue to give life to others.
Curtin Sarawak urges members of the public to attend the talks and also encourages them to make pledges to donate their organs as a way to show their love for society and the less fortunate.
