(27 September 2015, Sunday) Vester Ng only found out he had mild dyslexia after Secondary Three, and his academic progression had been tougher than most. He had always thought that he was a “foolish kid”. He realised his talent in singing, dancing and acting after he participated in a performance during his time at ITE. After graduating from ITE, he enrolled in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts’ Diploma in Theatre (English Drama), and shared the stage with Adrian Pang and Sharon Au, amongst others, after completing his studies.
The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts held its Convocation yesterday, with the 22-year-old Vester Ng being one of 779 graduating students. He took to the stage to give his Valedictory speech, sharing his challenges. In the article, he also gives credit to his NAFA lecturers for his success.
Yesterday’s convocation also saw the first 4 graduating students from NAFA who continued their studies from School of the Arts (SOTA). In a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by NAFA and SOTA in 2012, SOTA students could enrol in a NAFA Diploma programme as soon as after Year 4 of their studies. This MOU helps to open an additional academic pathway for young students to continue further studies in an arts education here in Singapore.
Ashley Chew, 19, is one of these students. She continued on her studies in NAFA from SOTA, and enrolled in the Diploma in Design & Media course. She said that she chose this path, as she aimed to gain a deeper understanding of design and practical. The programme gave her an opportunity to gain more experience in Digital Media at an internship, and to understand the industry better. Currently, there are 17 students from SOTA who are pursuing their diplomas at NAFA.
In a survey conducted with the 785 graduates from the previous year, 91% of graduates landed a job within 3 months after graduation, and 40% of them landed a job before graduation.
Many outstanding graduates were also conferred awards yesterday, which included the new “Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal Award” and the new “NAFA Chairman Award”.
Ms Sim Ann, Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Communications and Information, was Guest of Honour.
