For the first time ever in Asia, the inspiring legend, Hans Bacher, showcased his best works at an exhibition at The One Gallery, The One Academy. Bacher, who has 40 years of experience in the animated film industry, is the production designer of our favourite classical animated films such as Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Lilo & Stitch, Little Match Girl, Aladdin and Mulan.
Many of us grew up with those animated films mentioned and each of those works of art has left lovely memories in our childhood, which are regarded as a historical breakthrough in the animation film industry. Walk back through the memory lane in this coming special art exhibition as most of us have been, in one way or another, become part of it.
From 19th September to the 3rd of October 2015, the public has a rare opportunity to view the original masterpieces of these films by its Bacher himself at The One Gallery, The One Academy. This exhibition’s theme, ‘Dream Worlds: The Art of Animation Exhibition by Hans Bacher’, is inspired by his debut publication – Dream Worlds: Production Design for Animation, which is considered the best textbook for this subject worldwide.
Held in conjunction with the 40th anniversary celebration of his established career in the animated film industry, this exhibition reflects Bacher’s vast experience in the industry, having worked with some of the greatest minds there such as Who Frame Roger Rabbit’s animation director Richard Williams and one of the co-founders of DreamWorks Studios Steven Spielberg.
During the launch of this exhibition, Bacher himself gave an artist tour to all invited guests, telling them stories behind each precious artwork, when some of them were created before the times of CG or computer graphics and were hand drawn. Each artwork was in small sizes, he explained, because the artworks have to be created quickly but could take 3,000 colours. More time was taken to choose the right colours than the drawing itself.
Among all other works that Bacher has worked on, his favourite project was Mulan because everything that he has envisioned for Mulan was well translated on screen. It took about 800 artists and 5 years for Mulan to be completed. He was also grateful for the opportunity to work together with a creative director who also has the same vision as he has for Mulan.
Other projects that Bacher has worked on goes on and on, including Balto, Hercules, Fantasia 2000 and Brother Bear. Bacher is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has been honored with the Golden Camera Award and an Annie for outstanding individual achievement in Production Design.
Besides being a production artist, he has also authored and published two other books – Designed Brushes for Photoshop and Sketchbook- Composition Studies for Film. During his work, he has lived and worked in many countries around the world at Duesseldorf, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Manila and Tokyo. Bacher is currently a professor for film-design in Singapore, sharing his expertise with students all over Asia and Europe through lectures.
“The One Academy is proud to be selected as the exclusive venue to showcase these rare collections that have never been seen in the shores of Asia,” said Principal and Founder of The One Academy Tatsun Hoi. “The One Academy occasionally attempts to bring in works of internationally-acclaimed artists on top of showcasing works of its graduates. The One Gallery is a platform that illustrates the standard of the creative industry worldwide and hopefully, we will be able to bring in more internationally acclaimed artists in future that will be an eye-opening experience for our students here.”
This is not Bacher’s debut appearance in The One Academy as he has visited the creative education institution to teach the Digital Animation and Illustration students the world of animation and character design in the real industry.
The One Gallery is opened from Mondays to Fridays, 10am till 5pm, Saturdays from 10am till 1pm.
