Miri – 11 May 2022 – During the recent Tuition Free Week at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), the Curtin Civil Society, the university’s academic club for civil and construction engineering students, and the Civil and Construction Engineering Department at its Faculty of Engineering Science jointly hosted a ‘Civil Engineering Week’ for engineering students.
The Civil Engineering Week featured a variety of events and activities, including engineering lab sessions for students who missed the physical lab sessions during the Movement Control Order (MCO). The sessions covered concrete mixing and casting, soil testing, surveying and structural tests, and were well attended by third- and fourth-year students.
The activities also included a guest lecture by Curtin Malaysia alumni and engineer Lim Chuan Jet from Borneo Hot Mix Sdn. Bhd., who briefed the students on asphalt production. There was also a briefing on pavement construction for the Pan Borneo Highway project by Ir. Sam Yii from Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Sdn. Bhd., one of the project’s contractors.
This was followed by a visit to a testing lab and asphalt production facility at one of the company’s construction sites on the highway, as well as a visit to a bridge site where Ir. Yii highlighted its bored pile construction to the students. At this site, the students witnessed first-hand the processes that go into pavement construction, which is closely related to their transportation engineering and earthworks unit. They also had a chance to learn about bored pile construction, which is closely related to their geotechnical unit.
The students found the site visits most helpful, especially in relating what they are learning in their course units about pile capacity for geotechnical design and construction and integrated design and construction.
Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin University’s Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering, which equips students with the knowledge and skills to apply scientific and technological principles to the design and construction of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water supply and wastewater treatment systems, tunnels, power projects, offshore structures, and commercial and industrial buildings. They also acquire an understanding of the properties of construction materials and construction methods.
It is a four-year honours course accredited by Engineers Australia (EA) and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
