Miri – 18 February 2015 – The Curtin Young Associates (CYA) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is organising its annual youth camp for fourth and fifth formers in Miri and Bintulu from 14 to 17 March 2015.
The four-day CYA ‘Survivor Camp’ with the theme ‘Outsmart, Outlaugh, Outfun’ at the university’s campus is aimed at inspiring the students to pursue tertiary education upon completion of the secondary school studies.
The camp will also challenge the students’ physical and mental fitness and help them improve their communication and interpersonal skills through various activities such as ice-breaking and networking sessions, outdoor activities, interactive discussions and academic presentations.
Participants will be charged a nominal registration fee of RM30, which includes food and beverages and personal accident insurance. Participants will need to arrange their own transport to and from the campus.
This year’s camp will be jointly facilitated by the Miri Divisional Youth and Sports Department and the National Sports Institute (NSI) Miri.
The CYA has been organising the camp since 2011. Last year, 190 participants took part, making it the largest so far, and it is hoped more will sign up this year.
Established in 2010, the CYA is a youth outreach programme administered by the Marketing Department of Curtin Sarawak and coordinated by students of the university. Its membership is open to secondary school students in forms 4 and 5 throughout Sarawak. Currently, it has over 500 members.
Apart from the annual camp, the CYA organises self-improvement camps, educational talks, pre-examination workshops, sports events and other activities for secondary school students. Its objective is to create a community for young students of different social and cultural backgrounds to interact and expand their learning experiences and network of friends.
The benefits of membership in the CYA include getting up-to-date information on higher education, online academic support, useful study tips, updates on happenings and developments at the Curtin Sarawak campus, as well as participation in interesting competitions, activities and events organised exclusively for members.
To register for the ‘Survivor Camp’, download the registration form via the CYA’s website at www.curtin.edu.my/cya/ or Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CurtinYoungAssociates. The deadline for registration is 27 February 2015.
