Miri – 8 May 2013 – The newly established Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) Student Chapter of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will be organising the first Curtin Engineering Symposium (CES) at the university from 16 to 17 May 2013. It will be held from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm on both days.
The symposium, which focuses on developments in the oil and gas industry, will be a platform for university students from various engineering disciplines to interact with and learn from industry professionals from major oil and gas companies in the country. Those employed in the oil and gas industry are also encouraged to attend.
According to the organisers, SPE Sarawak Section chairperson Rick Carter and members of other SPE student chapters in Malaysia are expected to attend the symposium.
The symposium will include an open forum entitled ‘Petroleum Apocalypse: Are we running out of oil or are we running out of ideas? The Past, Present and Future of Unconventional Resources’, as well as talks by industry experts from the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and SPE.
The talks will cover topics such as ‘How, Who, What and Why? Multiple Disciplines of Engineering Bridging into the Oil and Gas Industry’, ‘The Needs of the Current Oil and Engineering Field’, ‘Subsurface Development: An Overview of Well Simulation, Recovery and Formation Evaluation on Wells’; and ‘Challenges Faced in the Oil and Gas Industry’.
In addition, there will be display booths, core sampling viewing, career talks for students, meet-and-greet sessions and recruitment activities.
The symposium is being sponsored by Sarawak Shell and JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Malaysia).
