Curtin Sarawak thanks those involved in its Open Day, donates to charities

All the staff and students, sponsors and representatives of charities gather for a group photo during the luncheon.

Miri – 15 October 2012 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently held an appreciation luncheon for over 200 of its staff and students who contributed to the success of its sixth Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2012 held on 15 September 2012.

They included organising committee and sub-committee members, staff of its three schools who participated in the event’s Innovation Expo, student clubs which organised showcases for the event such as its Green Mobility Revolution Showcase, Miri Got Talent Competition and Mr & Miss Curtin Contest, as well as staff and student volunteers.

Also attending the luncheon were representatives of the event sponsors and representatives of seven charitable bodies that participated in the event’s Charity & Community Corner.

The proceeds from the sale of the event’s door gift and lucky draw tickets and surplus funds amounting to RM9,000 were presented to the charities, namely the MRCS Sunflower Centre, Mental Health Association of Sarawak, National Autism Society of Malaysia, Human Life Service, Palliative Care Association Miri, PIBAKIS Miri and Piasau Animals Welfare Support. Two more charities – Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society and Kelab Sosial dan Kebajikan Harmoni Miri – will also be receiving similar donations.

In his welcoming speech, organising chairman Nicholas Leong thanked all those who contributed to the event, which attracted over 6,100 visitors, making it the largest Curtin Sarawak Open Day ever.

Leong disclosed that it was the first time the event achieved a budget surplus due to the overwhelming support of corporate sponsors and members of the public who purchased the door gift and lucky draw tickets. As a gesture of appreciation to the charitable bodies, which have been a part of the event for several years, it was decided to donate the funds to them.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Ian Kerr also expressed his thanks, saying that the university could not have achieved the success it did without the support of everyone. He said the Curtin Sarawak Open Day is a critical event for Curtin Sarawak each year as it gives members of the public the opportunity to visit its campus and learn more about its courses and facilities.
