Miri – 23 October 2015 – Three students from Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) represented the Curtin Sarawak Toastmasters Club at the Toastmasters International District 87 Area E1 Humorous Speech and Evaluation contest held at Pusat Pembangunan Sosial and Urbanisasi Miri recently.
Second-year entrepreneurship and marketing student Carmen Patrickoh, second-year computer system and networking student Muhamad Suhaimi bin Muhamad Mustafa and fourth-year electronic and communication engineering student Rexy Prakash Chacko were chosen to represent the university after winning the preliminary round held in September.
They progressed to the Area E1 grouping, beating competitors from five other Toastmasters International clubs in Miri. Carmen competed in the Humorous Speech Contest while Muhamad and Rexy contested in the Speech Evaluation Contest.
The Humorous Speech Contest requires an individual to give a seven-minute speech that incorporates inspirational and funny elements while the Speech Evaluation Contest requires the individual to present a speech on the pros and cons of the other contestants’ speeches within three minutes so that they can improve on their speeches in the future.
Rexy emerged the winner of the Area E1 Speech Evaluation Contest and moved on to compete and win against participants from 15 Toastmasters clubs under Division E (Miri-Bintulu Division). He will now represent Division E to the District 87 6th Semi-Annual Conference in Bali, Indonesia.
At the conference to be held from 30 October to 1 November, Rexy will compete against contestants from different divisions in East Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. The event will include educational workshops, keynote speeches and the final rounds of the Humorous Speech and Speech Evaluation Contests respectively.
According to Rexy, his active involvement in the Curtin Sarawak Toastmasters Club and the English speaking culture at the university contributed to his success in the Division E Speech Evaluation Contest.
Meanwhile, President of Curtin Sarawak Toastmasters Club Tan Yong Sheng said he was impressed with the students’ talent and skills in competing with individuals of different backgrounds. He wishes to see more people joining the Toastmasters Club and becoming better speakers and presenters.
