Miri – 29 April 2015 – Two representatives of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Student Section of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently participated in the Inter-Varsity Engineering Leadership Programme held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru.

Accompanying students Daniel Tie Yung Xiang and Genevieve Ann Tang Tuang Kah to the event, which saw the participation of more than 700 graduating engineering students, was associate lecturer and advisor to the Curtin Sarawak IEM Student Section Jameson Malang.

The event was jointly organised by UTM’s Career Centre, Office of Student Affairs & Alumni Centre for Academic Leadership & Professional Development, UTMLead, IEM-UTM Student Section and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (Southern Branch). Officiating at its opening was Datuk Ir. Haji Hasni bin Mohammad, chairman of the Johor Public Works, Rural & Regional Development Committee.

The objectives of the Engineering Leadership Programme include providing a platform for developing leadership skills for graduating engineering students; exposing them to future challenges of the engineering profession; providing guidance on developing strategies in team-working, building key relationships, networking and strategic communication skills; and providing an opportunity to network with professional engineers and fellow graduating engineering students in Malaysia.

Among the topics discussed during the event was the establishment of professional boundaries, appreciation, commitment and the spirit of cooperation in the engineering profession.

Tie, a civil engineering student, said he greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about advancements in construction technology, especially in Malaysia, at the event.

For petroleum engineering student Tang, a talk on the future of the oil and gas industry provided interesting insights into the Malaysian oil and gas industry. She said the challenges presented inspired her to broaden her knowledge of the industry.

Their participation in the event was sponsored by Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science and Young Engineers Section (YES).
