Miri – 27 October 2016 – 23 teachers from 11 secondary schools in Miri had the opportunity to learn about library management at a Cataloguing and Classification Workshop organised by Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) at its campus recently.
The workshop was facilitated by Curtin Sarawak senior librarian Sorina Ramli and technical services staff Nurul Huda Ibrahim, Diana Sengalang and Nora Tusan of the university’s Library.
Also present was Rosfatimah Wasli from Institut Pendidikan Guru Miri who shared her vast knowledge and experience in library management with the participants.
The objective of the workshop was to teach the participants basic library management such as cataloguing and classifying library materials. They were introduced to international cataloguing standards like Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH), as well as the latest standard, Resource Description and Access (RDA).
According to Curtin Sarawak’s Head of Library and Learning Commons Mac’ Earldon Mike Maxwell, library management practices change every now and then and it is crucial for library practitioners to keep abreast of the latest developments.
He said the workshop was part of the Library’s community outreach programme which aims to help secondary schools in Miri raise the standards of their libraries and strengthen the skills of their librarians.
