Miri – 22 November 2016 – Final-year Bachelor of Commerce students of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently visited various organisations in Miri to gain insights into their operations and practices.
The visits were organised by the CPA Australia Student Charter of Curtin Sarawak (CPAASC) with the support of the Department of Accounting of the university’s Faculty of Business as part of its ‘Miri Industrial Visit 2016’ programme to provide further enrichment of the students’ learning experience and help prepare them for their future careers.
Their first visit was to the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa where the students were given a briefing by General Manager Marc Cosyns, who in addition to talking about the five-star resort’s operations, shared his personal experiences in the hospitality industry. Internship placements and job opportunities at the resort were also discussed, followed by a tour and a networking session.
The next stop was the Miri office of KPMG in Malaysia, where they were welcomed and briefed by Director Tan Lee Khim on auditing and assurance services, as well as professional examination exemptions for commerce students. The students were also delighted to know that they are eligible to apply for internship placements at KPMG’s Miri office or other KPMG branches nationwide.
Meanwhile, at Pullman Miri Waterfront, they learned more about career opportunities and the benefits of working in the hospitality industry from General Manager Michael Weiss.
The students also visited Public Bank, where Branch Manager Teo Keng Chai spoke to them about the workings of the banking industry, the benefits of joining the industry, and how interview sessions for banking positions are conducted. The visit ended with a dialogue session with a number of Curtin Sarawak alumni employed at the bank.
Student Mira Yong said the visits were very enlightening as the students got to learn a lot about the operations and challenges faced by the different businesses, in addition to career opportunities for commerce graduates of the university.
