Miri – 9 April 2012 – 27 and 28 April 2012 are set to be momentous dates for several hundred students, staff and alumni of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) as the university holds its annual Award and Scholarship Ceremony, graduation ceremonies for its graduating classes of 2011, and annual dinner for its alumni.
The Award and Scholarship Ceremony will be held in the evening of 27 April in the Sarawak Grand Ballroom of the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa.
This year will see a change in the format for graduations. Instead of a single graduation ceremony for all degree programmes, there will be separate ceremonies for business and engineering and science programmes. There will furthermore not be a separate ceremony for diploma programmes, which will be incorporated into the School of Business’ graduation ceremony. This will align Curtin Sarawak’s graduation ceremonies with Curtin University’s in Perth and enhance the synergy between the mother campus and its largest international campus.
The School of Business and Diploma Graduation Ceremony will be in the morning of 28 April, followed by the School of Engineering and Science Graduation Ceremony in the afternoon. Both ceremonies will be held in Curtin Sarawak’s Recreation and Event Centre.
Also on 28 April will be the Curtin Sarawak Alumni Dinner for all Curtin Sarawak alumni in the Musical Corridor at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club.
The Award and Scholarship Ceremony will see students and staff of the university being recognised for academic or professional excellence, outstanding extracurricular activities and community service contributions. They will include students who made it into the Vice Chancellor’s List and graduating student ambassadors of the John Curtin Leadership Academy, Curtin’s elite leadership programme. Scholarships from Curtin and its industry partners, as well as individual donors, will also be presented to deserving students.
The School of Business and Diploma Graduation Ceremony, meanwhile, will see 208 students graduating from the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce programmes, 14 from the Graduate Diploma in Project Management, Master of Business Administration, Master of Finance, Master of Marketing and Master of Science (Project Management) programmes. Meanwhile, 56 students will graduate from the Diploma of Business and Diploma of Process Plant Technology programmes.
152 students will graduate from the School of Engineering and Science’s Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Technology programmes, as well as 8 from its Master of Philosophy, Master of Technology and Doctor of Philosophy programmes.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, chairman of the Curtin Sarawak Campus Council, is expected to officiate at all the events. Assistant Minister of Sports and Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also the chairman of Curtin Sarawak’s Management Board, will also be present, along with Curtin Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Ian Kerr; Chairman of Curtin (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., Datu Dr. Hatta Solhi; members of Curtin Sarawak Campus Council and Management Board, as well as a delegation from Curtin University in Perth headed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket.
Students who completed their programmes at the end of Semester 1 or Semester 2 of 2011 and have met all requirements for graduation have been invited to attend their respective graduation ceremonies.
