Miri – 27 June 2011 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak)’s exclusive club for secondary school students, the Curtin Young Associates (CYA), hosted its first ‘CYA Camp’ for its members in Miri recently.
The 2-day camp themed Jazz Your Mind at the university campus saw 59 participants from local secondary schools taking part.
According to Chief Operating Officer James Ng, the objective of the camp was to help the participants develop essential teamwork, critical thinking and soft skills to enhance their learning, communication, reading and writing.

“This was our first-ever camp for our CYA members and I am glad they have all enjoyed it. A number wished it could have been longer than two days and said they would readily recommend future camps to their friends,” commented Ng at the close of the camp.
Ng added that the organisers will review the feedback received from the participants and take them into account when planning future events to give the participants an even more fulfilling learning experience.
According to the Dean of the School of Business, Shamsul Kamariah Abdullah, the event was a collaborative effort between a team of academicians from the School of Business jointly headed by herself and the chairman of the school’s marketing committee, Ariffin Mohammad, and CYA coordinators comprising staff of the Student Recruitment Department and CYA student advisors.
Among the camp’s activities were interesting group games and a ‘telematch’ designed to promote teamwork and team dynamics. The participants also attended talks and workshops on topics like Enriching Your University Life facilitated by staff of the University Life Department and Know Your Learning Style by lecturers of the School of Business.

Launched last year, the CYA has about 500 members consisting of fourth and fifth formers of secondary schools throughout Sarawak. The benefits of membership on the CYA include up-to-date information on tertiary education in Malaysia, useful study tips, access to news on the latest happenings on the Curtin Sarawak campus, as well as participation in interesting competitions, activities and events exclusively for members.
In addition, members can network and establish lasting friendships with other students, including Curtin Sarawak students, through the CYA network.
