Miri – 15 January 2019 – In its continuing emphasis on providing quality tertiary education to Sarawakians and others, the Sarawak State Government has allocated RM2 million for Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) for its ongoing developmental projects.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the cheque to Curtin Malaysia pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski at a hotel here yesterday during the launch of a booklet on the 65 initiatives undertaken by the chief minister.
The allocation was a follow-up to Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari’s visit to Curtin Malaysia in late 2017, where he had assured that the Sarawak government would assist Curtin Malaysia in expanding its facilities, particularly in relation to information technology (IT) to meet the requirements of the state.
He said this was necessary to meet the needs of Industry 4.0, and that tertiary institutions in Sarawak needed to enhance their IT and other expertise in the line with the Sarawak government’s goal to develop its digital economy and natural resources.
Among those present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah; Utilities Minister Dat Sri Dr Stephen Rundi; Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian; and Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
Curtin University, based in Perth, Western Australia, is ranked in the top one per cent of universities worldwide in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2018 and has risen to 250th in the world in the 2018-19 QS World University Rankings (QSWUR).
It is also ranked 20th among the world’s top young universities in the 2019 edition of the QS Top 50 under 50, which measures the world’s best universities under 50 years of age.
Curtin Malaysia is Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia, with other Curtin international campuses located in Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius. Situated on a 1,000 acre campus in Miri, Sarawak, it is also the largest Australian international campus in the world.
It offers a unique international and cross-cultural learning experience with students from over 50 different countries and teaching staff from over 15 countries further strengthening its global focus.
Its course offerings include undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering and science, business and humanities, and pre-university foundation and intensive English courses.
Curtin Malaysia will mark its 20th anniversary this year and Curtin’s upward trajectory in the global rankings augurs well for the campus’ standing as the highest-ranked global university campus in Borneo and the largest Australian international campus in the world.
