Curtin DPVC’s Cup competition gets good response from Sarawak and Brunei bowlers

Miri – 11 November 2016 – 92 bowlers from Sarawak and Brunei competed in the recent Curtin Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor’s Cup bowling competition organised by the Curtin Bowling Club in collaboration with the Sports and Recreation Services section of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak).

The competition, formerly known as the Curtin Open Bowling Competition, was the fifth annual open competition organised by the Curtin Bowling Club and held at Megalanes East Bowling Centre Miri.

Officiating the launch of the competition was Curtin Sarawak Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Beena Giridharan. In her speech, Giridharan said she is an advocate of all forms of sports and physical activities that can help create healthy bodies and minds, particularly in light of our modern lifestyles where our health might be taken for granted.

“We need to take more care of our physical wellbeing and find time for healthy activities such as bowling. It is a sport that is not particularly strenuous and can be a lot of fun,” she said.

The competition was separated into a morning session for staff and students of the university and an afternoon session for members of the public.

The team category in the morning session was won by ‘Team Jass’ comprising Jeffery Lee, Abdur Rahim, Syafiq Shebli and Sakti Satesh. In second place was ‘Team Curtin Challengers’ comprising Dr Rajamohan Ganesan, Dr Moola Mohan Reddy, Dr M.V. Prasanna and Dr Lenin Gopal. ‘Team #Cincailah’ consisting of Nazirul Ashraf, Anderson Ng, Lau Shyang Jong and Patrick Mangahas came in third.

The top three teams walked away with cash prizes, trophies and hampers. Medals were awarded to the fourth and fifth placed teams, while the sixth to tenth placed teams received Megalanes East bowling vouchers.

In the male individual category, Dr M.V. Prasanna came up tops and was named ‘Best Male Bowler’, followed by Sakti Satesh and Jared Hon in second and third place.

In the female individual category, the title of ‘Best Female Bowler’ was clinched by Illiya Amalina, followed by second-placed Delicia Daviana and third-placed Eleanor Faith Dan.

Each winner in the individual categories won a trophy and cash, while the runners-up received KTunes vouchers.

Meanwhile, the afternoon session saw ‘Team No Regrets!’ consisting of Hydrick Stephenson, Mohamad Khairudin, Lau Lee See and Kana Lawai emerging as champions.

‘Team Frenz’ made up of Abang Jamallidon, Mohammad Fauzi, Norhazaidi Tahir and Ramli Yusuf and ‘Team Go Fighter V3’ comprising Zurina Shari, Andy Jana, Ariffin Yunos and Mohammad Affendy were placed second and third.

Cash prizes, trophies and hampers were awarded to the top three teams, while the fourth to tenth ranked teams were awarded medals. Bowling game vouchers were also awarded to the fourth to eighth ranked teams.

The ‘Best Individual Male Player’ and ‘Best Individual Female Player’ awards were won by Andy Jana and Fatimah Haji Ayup respectively.

The first and second runner-up titles in the individual male category went to Nasrul Abdullah and Edward Juit, and to Lau Lee See and Salawaty Sahar respectively in the individual female category. Each received a trophy and cash prize, while the fourth place winners were awarded Megalanes East bowling vouchers.

The competition was sponsored by Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation Safety and Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Dr Lee Kim Shin, ParkCity Everly Hotel Miri, Golden Screen Cinemas Miri, KTunes Karaoke, Megalanes East Bowling Centre Miri and the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa.

Curtin Bowling Club advisor Jameson Malang thanked all the sponsors and participants for their support. He also commended the club’s president and organising chairperson Fong Kin Kit and his organising committee for their efforts towards making the competition a success.
