When we choose a tertiary education, we often pick what piques our interest. Which course sounds the most interesting? Which career choice is considered lucrative? What sectors will be rising in ranks in the next four to five years? These are among the questions students ask themselves before embarking on a higher education journey.

Upon graduating, Aston realised that his passion lies in design, and his abilities allowed him to pursue a completely different sector, digital media design. Today, Aston is the Co-Founder of Spectro Visuals, a successful motion graphics studio. They have serviced many clients from top industries such as Oppo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Mazda and many others. Some of his best works include the commercials for BMW X Night 2015, Vezel, Mazda 6 Atenza and Mercedez-Benz Active Blind Spot Assist.
During one of his sharing sessions at his alma mater, The One Academy, he had imparted some key insight and wisdom to the upcoming creative generation.
According to Aston, it was his skills, talent and passion in arts that granted him the opportunity to pursue motion graphics. In essence, motion graphics is the use of digital footage or animation to create the illusion of motion for digital media projects.
During his days as a college student, he thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of dabbling in art and design. Later on, as he was working to build a career, he took inspiration from those around him, his environment and the hierarchy to build his digital media design empire.
“There is inspiration all around. Get inspired from everywhere and everything, from the people you see, things you say, music and everything around you. If you look into the details, you will find inspiration’, said Aston.
An expert in the digital media frontier, he emphasised on the importance of students being well-versed in different artistic philosophies such as postmodernism, expressionism, minimalism and science art so that later on, they will know the best art direction to follow in their work.
But the secret of success does not end there. According to Aston, a key element in the working environment is the freedom to be creative and open-minded. According to Aston, one’s work ethics is the most important aspect for a conducive working environment, while the physical environment itself is the supportive point. “Nothing is static, everything is dynamic.” Therefore, each person needs to constantly interact and motivate each other.
His advice to the younger generation is to first understand yourself. “Once you understand yourself, you will know where you want to go”, he concluded.
With success stories like Aston’s, it is clear that the possibilities of our future are indeed limitless. All one needs is the passion, determination and will to succeed!
