Miri – 2 April 2015 – Tan Sri Dato’ Azman Hashim, Chairman of the AmBank Group and one of Malaysia’s most prominent corporate leaders, will be giving a public lecture on his entrepreneurial journey at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) on 8 April 2015.
The lecture, hosted by Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Business and Humanities, is open to members of the public in addition to students and staff of the university. It will be held in the LTBS 1 lecture theatre at the Faculty of Business and Humanities building (Heron 2) from 1 pm to 2 pm.
In his lecture, Tan Sri Dato’ Azman will touch on his successful life journey from a simple kampung boy to the highly successful entrepreneur he is today. In addition, he will also talk about what it takes to be successful in today’s highly-competitive corporate arena.
Associate Professor Pauline Ho, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business and Humanities, said Curtin Sarawak is very honoured to have such a distinguished personality as Tan Sri Dato’ Azman give a public lecture at the campus and is sure that its students and staff will benefit greatly from it.
Born in July 1939 in Kuala Lumpur to a family of 13 siblings, Tan Sri pursued his tertiary education in accountancy on a Colombo Plan Scholarship in Australia from 1955 to 1960. He became a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Secretary before the age of 21.
In 1960, he became a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Accountants, Australia and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators. In the following years, he also became a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers, Malaysia; the Institute of Directors, Malaysia; and the Malaysian Institute of Management.
Tan Sri Dato’ Azman’s professional career began in Perth, Australia where he was employed by Messrs O.L. Haines & Co (Chartered Accountants) from 1955 to 1960. He returned to Malaysia to serve with Bank Negara Malaysia from 1960 to 1964.
He then left Bank Negara Malaysia to start his own accountancy practice Azman & Co., which later grew into a partnership, Azman Wong Salleh & Co. (Chartered Accountants).
In 1966, he joined the Board of Malayan Banking Berhad and was appointed Executive Director from 1971 to 1980. From 1980 to 1982, Tan Sri held the position of Executive Chairman of Kwong Yik Bank Berhad and in 1982, he became Chairman of the AmBank Group until today.
In addition to being Chairman of the AmBank Group, he is also the Executive Chairman of Amcorp Group Berhad and Chairman of several subsidiaries of the AmBank Group and Amcorp Properties Berhad.
Tan Sri Dato’ Azman was named ‘Asia’s Banker of the Year’ by FinanceAsia Magazine and ‘ASEAN Businessman of the Year’ by the ASEAN Business Forum (formerly known as the ASEAN Institute) in 1985 and 1993 respectively.
Other awards he has received were ‘Manager of the Year’ from the Harvard Business School Alumni Club of Malaysia in 1995; ‘Grand Entrepreneurial Award’ from The Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce in 1996; ‘Menteri Besar Grand Entrepreneurial Award’ from the Selangor Chamber of Commerce in 1997; ‘Academy Values for Life Excellence’ for his humanitarian contribution in 2004; and a lifetime achievement award at the 4th Annual Islamic Business and Finance Awards in 2009.
