Department of Multimedia Design and Animation, Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) students, Hoh Sheng Yue, Sheanne Chin Seng Wei and Yeoh Hui Qi, won first place in the open designs category of the 2022 HONOR Talents Global Design Awards.
In collaboration with HONOR Club, HONOR Developers and Themes, HONOR initiated the contest for global design submissions via their website on 30 May 2022 and closed the submission session on 7 October 2022. HONOR invited renowned artists and designers from around the globe to be the judges of the event. The categories opened for the contest were wallpapers, foldable wallpapers, watches, open designs, AR interactive artwork design, and interactive art installation design.
Hoh, Sheanne Chin and Yeoh were awarded an HONOR MagicBook 14 on 23 November 2022 as recognition of their aesthetic talents in producing exceptional artwork for the global contest.
Learning the results, the team of three was surprised and delighted at the same time. They said, “We entered this competition purely because we were intrigued by the themes raised by HONOR in the HONOR Talents Global Design Awards. We also hoped to explore our potential through this experience. As students who are still in their first step of becoming designers, we never thought that our artwork would be chosen in the award list, so it was definitely a surprise for us as soon as we received the notice.”
They added, “It would have been more challenging to create the artwork if we hadn’t collaborated as a team. It is the result of the collaboration, ideas and efforts of three different individuals. At the end of the day, we just want to grow together as an individual and designer too.”
The award-winning artwork titled “In the Heart of Nature” was based on the theme Renewal of Life · Return, proposed by HONOR. “We chose a tree to represent ‘the Heart of Nature’, as trees are the lungs of the earth and they nurture the whole ecosystem. Every day is a fresh beginning; an old tree passes on while a new tree is born. This is the beauty of return. However, we chose something deeper to express the renewal of life which is the tree rings, also known as annual rings. Each layer of circled wood within a tree is equivalent to one more year of wisdom,” described Hoh, Sheanne Chin and Yeoh.
“In the Heart of Nature” depicts the tree rings of annual wisdom gain.
