Malaysian Creative Director Rakes In Big Achievements Abroad

Joey Khor is the Executive Creative Director of George P. Johnson (GPJ Greater China), leading his experiential marketing agency to numerous award wins.

Joey Khor is one of many Malaysians living and working abroad who have made a name for themselves in the industry. As the Executive Creative Director of George P. Johnson (GPJ Greater China), part of an independent global network ranked number one as the world’s leading experiential marketing agency, he has led the expansion of the agency’s capabilities and services, leading to numerous award wins.

In recently announced results of the Event Marketing Awards 2021 through an online awards ceremony, GPJ China took home the big win of 17 awards – 4 Golds, 4 Silvers, 8 Bronzes and also the Grand Prix for Best of Brand Experience for their ‘Tencent Games Annual Launch 2020’ campaign. Organised by Campaign Asia-Pacific, the Event Marketing Awards sets out to celebrate creativity and innovation, and recognise the companies that applied best practice to the creation, planning, production and management of successful events in Asia-Pacific, both live and virtual.

Khor is a graduate of The One Academy who graduated in 2001 and majored in Multimedia with 20 years of working experience in the industry. He started his career by doing interactive web design, before moving on to motion design and animation, having co-founded Hue Visualab and later joined Naga DDB to work on integrated marketing and branding. He has also worked for VLT Kuala Lumpur where he did digital branding and solutions. In 2016, he took a chance on a career opportunity at George P. Johnson, and relocated to Beijing, China, where he currently lives. He has worked for some of the largest brands in China such as Tencent, OPPO, Huawei and Alibaba.

He once shared that, “The only thing constant in the world is change,” and that to stay relevant, one needs to constantly rethink the value of their work and integrate a wider set of principles to further understand how to make it work for their clients. He pointed out that most successful brands that have changed the world today had listened to what the world wanted even before the world knew it.

“One of the key qualities to be successful is the ability to be flexible and balance everything. You need to have enough confidence and enough self-doubt to be able to blend into different environments. Admitting to one’s own shortcomings is the way to improve, so adopt new skill and adapt into new times,” he shared. He has also said that his inspiration comes from everyday life and everyday people, imagining ideas as unfolding stories, a stream of inclusive engagements and interactions.
