Tunku Abdul Tunku Abdul Rahman University College’s (‘TAR UC’) students made a strong run at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (‘ICAEW’) Regional Business Challenge this year, excelling at the national level as well as impressing the judges at the South East Asian level to underline TAR UC’s tradition of excellence in and outside of the classroom.
The annual competition organised by ICAEW serves as a platform for undergraduates to sharpen their understanding and practical skills in the field of business and finance through studying case studies and presentation of solutions within a tight deadline. It also offers participating students the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the most influential employers such as Deloitte and Maybank.
At the ICAEW Malaysia Regional Business Challenge Northern Regional Heats held on 21 April 2018, TAR UC’s team consisting of six Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) students namely Tan Jye, Lee Peng Qing, Chong Hsien Leon, Cha Chin Seng, Isabelle Pong Wen-Xin and Revathi Naidu A/P Rejaram Naidu, beat 20 other teams to be named as the Northern Region champion.
At the Malaysia Heats Finals, the same TAR UC team went on to impress the judges and claimed the Champion title along the way. Their efforts earned them the opportunity of representing Malaysia at the ICAEW South East Asia Business Challenge 2018 held in Jakarta, Indonesia. In addition, Isabelle Pong stood out individually with her public speaking skills and was conferred the Best Speaker Award.
The South East Asian level of the competition held on 17 May 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia, saw TAR UC’s team keep the Malaysia flag flying amid the strong competition from Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Once again, Isabelle Pong did not disappoint, wowed the crowd, and went on to win the Best Presenter Award.
On winning the Best Speaker and Best Presenter awards, Isabelle confessed it was quite an unexpected achievement.
“At TAR UC, I was given so many opportunities to speak publicly in classes and competitions since my Diploma days. That experience helped me speak confidently in these competitions.”
Chin Seng explained the motivation behind the team’s success. “We worked very hard and kept on challenging ourselves because all of us wanted to achieve something great before we graduate,” he said.
Another team member Peng Qing did not forget to credit their mentor, Johan Lim Kii Geat from the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business (‘FAFB’), for his constant moral support throughout this fruitful journey, adding it was his guidance and constructive criticism that helped them improve drastically during their preparation for the competitions.
Isabelle added that she is proud to have studied at TAR UC. “It comes to show that TAR UC is a pretty great place to study after all! If we truly put our mind to it, we can prove that TAR UC students are just as brilliant as students from any other institutions out there,” she said.
