Miri – 3 February 2016 – A two-day course on handling termination of employment without violating the law will be conducted by Curtin Consultancy Services (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (CCS), the consultancy arm of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), on 7 and 8 March 2016.
The course will be held at Dynasty Hotel Miri from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm on both days and managers, heads of department and company executives involved in people management and industrial relations are encouraged to participate.
The course fee is RM1,190 per participant but earlybird and group discounts of RM200 are applicable to those who register and pay before 12 February 2016, and companies who register three participants.
It will be facilitated by Dr. Balakrishnan Muniapan, a Human Resource Management (HRM) specialist and senior lecturer at Wawasan Open University, Penang.
According to Dr. Balakrishnan, terminating an employee can be a difficult task as the employment laws in Malaysia are generally protective of the employees’ security of tenure. As a result, the right of the employer to terminate the employees’ services is limited.
He said that while termination and dismissal are prerogatives of employers under Section 13(3) of the Industrial Relations Act 1967, many are unaware that they do not have the absolute right to terminate an employee’s service.
The course is designed to equip them with the right knowledge to handle termination of employment without violating existing laws. It will comprise short lectures, group discussions and presentations, and role plays, as well as case studies.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be better equipped to practise good employment relationships in their workplaces; differentiate between termination and dismissal; identify and use various types of termination of employment contracts to avoid unfair termination; and terminate employees with minimum risk.
Dr. Balakrishnan is widely recognised for his HRM teaching and research excellence in Malaysia and Asia. He was conferred the Best Professor in HRM Award at the World Education Congress, Asia’s Education Excellence Award 2014 in Singapore, and Educational Leadership Award at the Golden Globe Tigers Awards in Kuala Lumpur in 2015 for his contributions to the field of HRM.
He has vast experience conducting HRM training and consultancy programmes for companies such as Penang Seagate, Dell Computers, Hitachi, Kanebo Malaysia, Sabah Soft Wood Bhd., Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), LAKU Management Sdn. Bhd., Miri Port Authority, PETRONAS and Sarawak Plantations Bhd.
