Talk on Chinese calligraphy and painting

Renowned Chinese calligrapher Prof Zhao Lixin was invited by UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) to present a talk titled “The Similarities of Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Painting (中国书法和绘画之共性)” at UTAR Kampar Campus on 22 January 2016.

Prof Zhao is currently a visiting professor of ICS, an associate professor in Shandong Agricultural University, a member of the Chinese Calligrapher Association, a member of the Zhonghua Poetry Association of China, a commissioner of the Inscribing Committee of Calligrapher Association of Shandong Province, the director of Dongyue Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute, and the vice-chairman of the Calligraphy Association of Taian.

Present at the talk were UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, ICS Dean Dr Chong Siou Wei, ICS Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Wong Wun Bin, ICS Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Lim Chee Men, ICS Adjunct Professor Prof Dr Lim Chooi Kwa, students of calligraphy, and members of the public.

During the introduction session, Dr Wong introduced Prof Zhao as a knowledgeable artist, especially in Chinese calligraphy. He is proficient in cursive script （草书）, clerical script （隶书）, oracle bone script（甲骨文）, bronze inscriptions（金文）, small seal script（小篆）, running script（行书）, and other styles of Chinese calligraphy.

In the talk, Prof Zhao elucidated on the “homologous culture of Chinese calligraphy and painting（书画同源）” and the close relationship between both. Prof Zhao emphasised that a piece of Chinese calligraphy artworkis not just a solid form but is a spiritual metamorphosis of an author, as it carries the author’s thinking and aesthetic imagery.

The talk ended with a Q&A session and a demonstration of calligraphy by Prof Zhao.
