Miri – 29 January 2016 – Curtin University has been ranked the 26th most international university in the world, and second in Australia on the Times Higher Education (THE) list of the top 200 most international universities.
The THE list ranks universities by key aspects of internationalisation such as on-campus diversity and global academic collaborations.
Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the results reflect Curtin University’s position as one of the most outward-looking institutions in the world.

“I am delighted that Curtin’s collaboration with global partners and capacity to attract academics and students from around the world has been recognised in this way,” Professor Terry said.
She added that the results further support Curtin University’s efforts to be internationally competitive and prominent in the education sector, ensuring that it is engaged in major international research collaborations and that its students are graduating with the skills and experiences required to participate effectively in a globalised workforce.
Meanwhile, Professor Jim Mienczakowski, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak, Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), Curtin University’s largest international campus, said Curtin’s standing among the most international universities is an important recognition for any future students seeking to gain a top-class international qualification.
“It means that Curtin’s efforts to provide world-class education, service and opportunities to international and domestic students has been recognised globally,” said Professor Mienczakowski.
Curtin University in Australia currently has over 15,000 students enrolled from more than 115 countries, making it the fourth largest international student population of any Australian university.
The Sarawak campus also has a very international student population with close to 4,000 students from more than 45 countries. Staff from some 15 countries further strengthen its international outlook.
Times Higher Education has ranked Curtin University in the top 10 percent of universities in the world based on the international outlook indicator of their flagship World University Ranking 2015/16. Universities are measured on their proportion of international students, international staff, and research publications with at least one co-author from another country.
In other global rankings, Curtin University is currently ranked in the top two per cent of universities worldwide in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2015 (ARWU) and has received a five star overall excellence rating in the QS Stars University Ratings 2015. It has also been ranked 23rd in the QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) Top 50 under 50, a global review of young institutions under 50 years old. In the QSWUR by Subject, it is ranked in the top 200 worldwide.
Curtin University’s national and international reputation for research excellence was also acknowledged in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2015 results.
Professor Mienczakowski commented that Curtin University’s stellar achievements in the various rankings reflect well on its offshore campuses, given that they offer the same high-impact and innovative Curtin courses, qualifications and learning experience as the main campus.
He said Curtin Sarawak prides itself on being a part of a university recognised globally for its excellence in education and research and is continuing to consolidate its position as an internationally recognised, research-active institution in Malaysia that matches academic excellence to real world impact.
