(8 December 2015, Tuesday) In recent times, many Chinese chamber music groups such as the Singapore Ruan Xian Chamber Ensemble, Resonance, The Pipa Quartet and Dicapella Dizi Ensemble have flourished in Singapore. Likewise, StringWerkz is a huqin chamber music group formed by Wong Qin Kai (erhu) in July 2012 as part of his Chamber Music module while he was a BMus (Hons) student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Members include with Rozie Hoong (gaohu), Chia Wan Hua (erhu), Shunta Goh (erhu) and Eunice Koh (cello). All are alumni of the NAFA School of Music except Eunice, who is currently a BMus 3 student.
The group has won awards at the Terem Crossover International Music Competition in 2013 as well as the National Chinese Music Competition in 2014, and would be putting up their first concert on 12 December 2015. They have commissioned part-time lecturer at the NAFA School of Music, Mr. Eric Watson, to compose a new piece titled “Ancient Air”, to be premiered at the concert. Future plans include participation in performances overseas and to conduct workshops to educate people about huqin music.
