Miri – 14 August 2013 – The upcoming 4th Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) National Exhibition at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will feature over 30 engineering projects by students of Curtin Sarawak and other institutions of higher learning.
The 2-day event is being jointly organised by the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch and the Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EBMS) Malaysia Chapter at Curtin Sarawak’s Recreation & Event Centre. Entry to the exhibition will be free of charge and it is open to staff and students of Curtin Sarawak as well as the general public from 10 am to 4 pm from 22 to 23 August 2013.
Previously known as the ‘Electronic Exhibition’, this year’s event carries the theme ‘Technology of the New Era’.
Besides Curtin Sarawak, other participating universities include Multimedia University (MMU), University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and University Teknikal Melaka (UTeM).
The opening ceremony on 22 August 2013 will be attended by local businessman and philanthropist Hii King Chiong, who will be the guest of honour, as well as representatives from Curtin Sarawak and the other participating institutions.

Hii, a strong supporter of educational events, was one of the biggest sponsors at last year’s exhibition. He strongly believes that the youths deserve a holistic education to enable them to contribute to shaping tomorrow’s future.
The exhibition offers opportunities to students and visitors to explore new technologies as well as meet and network with the industry and technology experts and event supporters from X-Fab, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), DreamCatcher and IEEE Malaysia.
In addition, there will be ‘Who can assemble a computer the fastest?’ competition; workshops on cable crimping; project presentations by students, as well as walk-in interviews by X-Fab, and talks on EMBS and global opportunities in the IEEE.
According to third-year electrical power engineering student and Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch chairperson Esther Ling, among the many projects to be showcased is the Omni Wheel, a robot device initiated by Andy Lease, a second-year electronic and communication engineering student at Curtin Sarawak; and racing robots built by the university’s SmartCar team.
Last year, the exhibition attracted the participation of more than 700 staff and students of the varsity, students of local secondary schools, and members of the public.
IEEE, founded in the United States, is the world’s largest technical professional society and serves to advance innovation and technology for the benefit of humanity. Its members consist of professionals from the electrical, electronic and computing fields as well as areas related to science and technology. The IEEE Student Branch at Curtin Sarawak was established in 2008 and currently has about 50 members.
