Miri – 9 April 2013 – Students and staff of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will be marking Earth Day 2013 with an Earth Day Celebration event at the university campus on 15 April 2013, prior to the students’ tuition-free week.
Organised by the Curtin Environmental Club (CEC), which currently has some 100 student and staff members, the day-long event will feature a ‘Cycling to Campus’ campaign in the morning, followed by recycling and signature campaigns.
There will also be the planting of fruit trees, a debate, talk on animal care, environmental awareness talk, screening of environmental videos, music and song performances, as well as the sale of vegetarian food and drinks and reusable bottles and containers.
To raise awareness of green technologies and nature, there will be showcases of renewable energy kits; clean chemical energy, microalgae wastewater treatment; eco-friendly concrete; environment-related machinery; and applied geology. The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Miri Branch will also be showcasing its activities in the Miri area.
The event is being supported by a number of student clubs at Curtin Sarawak, including the Curtin Oratory and Debating Society, Curtin University Engineers Club (CUTEC), IEEE Curtin Sarawak, Curtin Sarawak Chemical Engineering Student Club, Curtin Civil Society, Curtin University Mechanical Engineering Club, Curtin Geology Club, and Curtin Tzu Chi Foundation Youth Association Club.
Also supporting the event are the Piasau Animals Welfare Support (PAWS) and Zero Strays Miri, which will organise an animal adoption programme; Malaysian Nature Society, Miri Branch; and the university’s student council and Environmental Sustainability Committee.
Every year on 22 April, more than one billion people take part in Earth Day. Across the globe, individuals, communities, organisations and governments acknowledge the amazing planet we call home and take action to protect it.
“We are excited to organise this event in to demonstrate our support for Earth Day and for environmental action worldwide. We hope to get the full support of our students and staff on the day,” said Han Yi Chiew, president of the CEC.
He added that staff and students attending the event are encouraged to dress in green as a show of support.
