900 LED lanterns to light up Chinatown for Mid-Autumn Festival

(31 August 2016, Wednesday) For the first time, LED lanterns will be used when Chinatown lights up for the Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday (Sep 3) – part of organisers’ efforts to make the street light-up more environmentally friendly. The light-up will be officially launched on Saturday, in an opening ceremony to be attended by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

The lights run from Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road to South Bridge Road and comprise about 900 handcrafted lanterns, each fitted with LED lights, said the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee. It added that the LED lights are brighter, and will also help reduce the amount of electricity used by up to 70 per cent.

Taking pride of place at the junction of Eu Tong Sen and Upper Cross streets is a 12-metre lantern of Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the moon. Organisers said the light-up was conceptualised and designed by eight Year Two students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, working with 36 expert lantern craftsmen from China. From Saturday until Sep 15, there will also be nightly music and dance performances at Kreta Ayer Square featuring local entertainers as well as troupes from China.
