Miri – 30 October 2014 – The Curtin Career Fair 2014 was launched in an opening ceremony attended by representatives of the 38 participating companies based in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Labuan, as well as Kuching, Bintulu and Miri in Sarawak.
Held at the Recreation & Event Centre of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), the 2-day fair gives students and alumni of Curtin Sarawak and other educational institutions in Miri, as well as fresh graduates and working adults seeking careers in a variety of industries, the opportunity to connect with the potential employers. They also get to attend a series of career talks by representatives of some of the companies.
In his welcoming speech, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak, Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia, said that, as the leading educational institution in northern Sarawak with excellent links with industry, it was a pleasure for the university to hold the annual fair as part of its commitment to its students, corporate partners, and the community in providing job opportunities and skilled manpower.
He said that many of those who had visited the Curtin Career Fair in the past have successfully gained employment through contact with the participating employers. He also said that a good number of Curtin Sarawak’s students managed to secure jobs even before they graduated thanks to the fair.
Also present were the dean of Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science, Professor Michael Cloke; University Life Manager Haslina Malek, Curtin Consultancy Services Manager Liew Mei Yin and Corporate Communications Manager Nicholas Leong.
The fair is organised by the Career & Alumni Services section of Curtin Sarawak’s University Life Department and is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm on both days. Admission is free of charge.
According to Haslina, the participating employers will be recruiting across a large section of industries, including but not limited to, engineering, construction, oil and gas, financial services, retail, timber and education.
“We had over 600 students and 200 alumni and members of the public attending the fair last year, and we look forward to seeing a bigger number of attendees this year,” she remarked.
